The healing process is different enough that the products aren't fully interchangeable. Tattoo aftercare is designed for body skin — thicker dermis, larger surface area, more aggressive ink deposit. Products like Bull Tattoo Purple Formula, Ink Eeze Pink Ointment, and Balm Tattoo Original Aftercare are formulated for that context — they manage weeping, peeling, and ink oxidation over a 2–4 week heal cycle on body skin. PMU aftercare is designed for facial skin — thinner, more reactive, faster healing, and more prone to swelling and sensitivity in the first 48 hours. The practical difference: a heavy body aftercare ointment on a fresh brow or lip procedure can oversaturate the skin and affect pigment retention. For PMU work, lighter formulas and minimal application in the first week are the standard recommendation. Dynamic Ganga Recover, Balm Tattoo Shot, and PurTat are the more appropriate options for PMU clients. Most studios stock both categories and give clients procedure-specific aftercare instructions rather than a single product for everything.
Zensa Numbing Cream is the most widely used option in Canadian PMU studios for a straightforward reason: it's Health Canada approved, water-based, and has a well-established onset time and sensitivity profile that artists can work around predictably. The water-based formula matters for PMU specifically — oil-based numbing products can affect how pigment implants and how the skin accepts ink during the procedure. Dr. Numb Topical Anesthetic covers the same category at a lower price point and works well for body tattoo numbing where the oil-base concern is less relevant. The Solution Numbing Spray is the practical choice for reapplication mid-procedure — easier to apply over broken skin than a cream without disturbing the work area. For PMU: Zensa for pre-procedure, The Solution Spray for touch-up during the session.
CaviCide is an intermediate-level surface disinfectant — it kills bacteria, viruses, fungi, and mycobacteria on hard non-porous surfaces within the contact time specified on the label. The reason it became the professional standard in tattoo and PMU studios is practical: it's effective against a broad spectrum of pathogens, it doesn't require rinsing after application, and it's safe for use on most studio surfaces including machines, workstations, and equipment. CaviWipes are the same formula in pre-saturated wipe form for quick surface turnover between clients. The One Minute formulation is the faster-acting option — same efficacy, shorter contact time, which matters in studios with back-to-back bookings. Most provincial health regulations for tattoo and PMU studios require intermediate-level disinfection between clients — CaviCide satisfies that requirement.
Green Soap is a vegetable oil-based soap used as a skin cleanser and working solution during both tattoo and PMU procedures. Pre-procedure it removes surface oils, dead skin cells, and makeup residue to give a clean working surface. During the procedure it's used diluted as a rinse — applied to the skin between passes to remove excess pigment and keep the work area clean without irritating the skin. It's also used post-procedure for the initial cleanup before aftercare is applied. The concentration matters: most artists dilute Green Soap significantly for use on facial skin during PMU — full concentration is more appropriate for body work. It's one of the few products that crosses cleanly between tattoo and PMU workflows with no substitution needed.
Three different cap formats solving different problems. Ink Caps with Base have an attached flat base that keeps the cap stable on the work surface without tipping — practical for body tattoo work where the cap sits on a tray and gets reached for repeatedly during a long session. Biodegradable Ink Caps are the same functional cap in a material that breaks down after disposal — relevant for studios with an environmental policy or operating in jurisdictions where biodegradable single-use requirements are coming into effect. Interlock Ink Caps are designed to connect together in a chain — useful for artists running multiple colours simultaneously who want the caps fixed in a specific order and position rather than loose on a tray. Nord Skull Ink Caps are a different shape — wider opening, lower profile — which some artists prefer for thick pigments or shading work where a standard cap opening restricts brush or mixing tool movement.
Hustle Butter Deluxe is a shea and mango butter-based product used in two distinct phases of a tattoo session. Before the procedure it's applied to the skin as a prep medium — it softens the skin surface and reduces friction during stencil transfer. During the procedure it replaces petroleum-based products as a working lubricant — applied to the skin while tattooing to reduce trauma and keep the surface workable. Some artists also use it as an aftercare product in the early healing phase. The packette format is the single-use hygiene-compliant version — relevant for studios where dipping into a shared jar raises cross-contamination concerns. Hustle Butter is primarily a body tattoo product; for PMU facial procedures, lighter formulas are generally preferred.
Pigment modifiers change the working properties of PMU pigments without changing the colour significantly. Thin Shading Solution — both Perma Blend standard and LUXE versions — reduces pigment viscosity for powder brow and ombre shading work where a thinner, more diffused deposit is the goal. Thicker pigment straight from the bottle is designed for saturation; thinned pigment spreads more evenly and builds gradually, which is what powder technique requires. Perma Blend Gourd Toner adjusts colour temperature — used to shift a pigment's undertone before implantation when the straight shade isn't quite right for the client's skin tone. Etalon Mix Thinner/Pigment Solution works the same way within the Etalon Mix colour system. Correctors — Pumpkin, Olive, Yellow from Perma Blend; Orange, Yellow, Copper, Olive, Graphite, Ochre, Terracotta from Draiff and Etalon Mix — are used to neutralise existing PMU that has healed with an unwanted colour shift before a correction procedure goes on top. Electrum Gold Standard and Petrify Ink Sponge Liquid Solidifier are waste management products — they solidify liquid pigment waste for safe disposal rather than pouring pigment down the drain.
Two options here: Nord 3D Lips Practice Skin and 3D Face PMU Tattoo Practice Skin. The 3D format is the relevant distinction — flat practice pads simulate needle penetration but not the contour, curvature, and dimensional variation of real facial skin. For PMU lip work specifically, the curvature of the lip and the transition from the vermilion border to the surrounding skin is part of what makes the procedure technically demanding — practising on a flat surface doesn't replicate that. The 3D Lips Practice Skin replicates the lip contour in three dimensions, which gives a more accurate simulation of how the machine angle, hand pressure, and stroke direction need to adjust as you move across the lip shape. The 3D Face Practice Skin covers the full facial surface — useful for artists training across multiple PMU procedures or for studios running structured training programmes for new artists.
